The student was taking Yaz for acne, and the lawsuit claims the drug label fails to warn consumers about the dangerous Yaz side effects like blood clots.  The Yaz lawsuit also claims that this new generation of birth control drugs has more potentially serious side effects than previous prescription birth control drugs.

This newest Yaz lawsuit follows closely on the heels of publication of two medical studies published in the British Medicl Journal.  The studies suggest evidence that women taking birth control drugs containing the hormone drospirenone, which is the main ingredient in Yaz and Yasmin, are two or three times more likely to develop serious blood clots, compared to women taking previous generation birth control drugs which do not contain drospirenone.

Over a thousand lawsuits have already been filed over side effects stemming from taking Yasmin, Yaz and Ocella.  The federal class actions  have been consolidated into Yasmin Class action lawsuits, centralized in Illinois.  The Yasmin class action lawsuits have resulted in decreased sales of the drug.

In the meantime, Bayer has developed and marketed a new birth control pill called Mirena.  Mirena is a levonorgestral-based pill, which is thought to be safer then drospirenone.  There is supposedly less risk of blood clots in Mirena.  However, there is a study that claims results showing increased risk of blood clots of four times, in women taking Mirena.  It’s all relative: while that sounds bad, it’s better than the risk created by drospirenone, which is over six times that of women not taking the drug.

Yaz contains a progestin hormone that may cause potassium levels in the body to become dangerously high.  This can lead to strokes, heart attacks, or blood clots.  Packaging for Yaz birth control did not sufficiently warn women about these serious risks, say the attorneys for a Yaz class action suit in Wisconsin.

Serious health problems stemming from Yaz use  include  heart attack, stroke, pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis and gallbladder disease.

Bayer’s ads also strongly suggested that Yaz will cure PMS conditions, and acne, for which is absolutely has not been approved by the FDA.  Yaz has only been approved as an oral contraceptive and as treatment for PMDD, a sever form of PMS but with different symptoms of PMS.

Yaz uses a combination of hormones, called ethinyl estradiol and drospirenone (DRSP).  Both are synthetic variants of estrogen and progestin.  Drospirenone is a progestin and very likely the source of serious health problems reported in women taking Yaz.  Drospirenone is a “fourth generation” progestin, and is also found in Yasmin and its generic version, Ocella.

Yaz side effects are usually caused by too much or too little of estrogen and progestin in the pill formulation.  Symptoms can include:

Any woman using a estrogen-progestin birth control like Yasmin, Yaz, or Ocella (or even NuvaRing and Ortho Evra) should watch out for blood clots.  Here are some of the major symptoms:

• headaches
• chest pain
• leg pain
• blurred vision

Ocella uses the same chemicals and synthetic  hormones as Yasmin, Drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol, to prevent ovulation.  It also causes the same side effects as Yasmin.  Ocella side effects are a serious health concern. Drospirenone is also a strong diuretic, meaning it causes you to lose fluids through urination.  This fluid loss will cause the levels of sodium in your blood to drop, which results in higher potassium levels due to the imbalance that’s left.  This condition is called hyperkalemia.  Symptoms of hyperkalemia can often not appear, but can include:

• Irregular heartbeat
• Slow, weak, or absent pulse
• Nausea
